Watch For The Signs! ... Yo, What Signs?

Look carefully: Jesus didn't really say, "Watch for the signs!" He said, "Straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near" (Luke 21:28), and "When you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near" (Luke 21:31).
We can spend so much time like Stanley Stargazer, looking up in the sky for Jesus to come riding down on his white stallion, that we miss Jesus when he comes to us in the Norman Navigators and William Warriors of the world.
The kingdom of God is near to you! Two thousand years ago, Jesus told his followers this (Mark 1:15), and he told them to seek this kingdom first (Matthew 6:33). That tells me that the kingdom of God is not some pie-in-the-sky, in the sweet bye-and-bye. The kingdom of God is here and now, when the hearts of men and women are yielded to the Holy Spirit.
So, stop looking up at the sky for Jesus to come. He is here!

Narrator: "Watch for the signs!" Throughout scripture, we are told about signs of the end-times. Before Jesus came, the Hebrew prophets talked about "that day," when God is coming to reign in power and majesty ... and then Jesus came and told us about it as well.
(TV Reporter enters stage left, holding microphone)
Narrator: Watch for the signs! ... Yo, what signs?
TV Reporter: Scientists at the Naval Observatory say that the meteor shower which we are experiencing is a millennial event. We won't see another display like this until the year 3013! (Exits stage left)
(Stanley Stargazer enters stage right)
Stanley: This is IT: I know it!
Narrator: Who are you, and what is IT?
Stanley: I'm Stanley Stargazer ... and this here now meteor shower has got to be the sign in the heavens that Jesus was telling us about. He's comin' back and I'm gonna be here to see it! (Pumps his fist) Yesssss! (Walks around the stage, gazing up at the sky)
Narrator: Hmmmmm, I don't know.
(Norman Navigator enters stage left, wearing a yellow rain slicker; he bumps into Stanley)
Norman: Oh, I'm sorry!
Stanley: Hey, watch where you're going, bozo!
Norman: Um, it seems to me that you might want to watch where you're going, sir.
Stanley: I am watching where I'm going, you dim bulb! I'm watching the signs in the heavens. But who are you, and why are you dressed for heavy weather on a beautiful night like this?
Norman: I'm Norman Navigator and my boat just got in, ahead of the worst hurricane I've ever seen! And it's comin' this way. My boat is gonna be history, but I hope it's not too late to save my house and my family. We've got to warn our neighbors! Come on! (Norman exits stage right)
Stanley: (Pumps his fist) See? It's another sign: "Roaring of the sea and the waves." I'm tellin' ya: Jesus is coming any minute now! (Stanley keeps looking at the sky, rubbing his hands together)
(William Warrior enters, stage left -- he is wounded)
William: Help! (Bumps into Stanley) Oh, I'm sorry!
Stanley: Watch where you're going, dirt-ball! (Brushes off his sleeve) Eeeww, gross! You got blood all over me! Who in the world are you, and what's wrong with you?
William: I'm William Warrior, and I've just come from the battlefields of Terra Firma. I tell you, it's total carnage out there! Terras are shooting at Firmas, and Firmas are raping Terras ... and the children are caught in the crossfire! Won't someone help me stop the hating and killing?
Stanley: (Pumps his fist) Aha! See, there's another sign: "Upon the earth, dismay among nations"! It's all adding up: Jesus is on his way! (Looks up at the sky, rubbing his hands together)
(William exits, stage right. Stanley continues walking around and looking up; finally, his neck gets tired and he stops)
Stanley: (Holds arms out and shrugs his shoulders) Well?
Voice of Jesus: (Offstage) Well, what? Stanley, are you waiting for me to come in a cloud with power and great glory?
Stanley: Lord? Is that you? (Looks around) Where are you? When are you coming?
Voice of Jesus: I already came to you, Stanley; and you didn't see me.
Stanley: You already came, Lord? How did I miss you?
Voice of Jesus: You bumped right into me, Stanley! (Norman Navigator enters, stage right) Remember Norman?
Norman: I hope it's not too late to save my house and my family. We've got to warn our neighbors!
Stanley: Norman? You were Norman, Lord?
Voice of Jesus: Sure 'nuff. (William Warrior enters, stage right) And remember William?
William: Won't someone help me stop the hating and killing?
Stanley: And you were William, too, Lord?
Voice of Jesus: That I am.
Stanley: Oh, Lord, I should have known! "Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me." How could I have missed you?
Voice of Jesus: You were too busy looking up at the clouds, Stan!
Stanley: But, Lord, I was watching for the signs! And the signs are so abundant: natural disasters; wars; rape, riot, and rebellion; demagogues on all sides. I was just sure that the kingdom of God is near!
Voice of Jesus: It is, Stan, it is.
Stanley: Well, then, when are you coming in the cloud with great power and glory, Lord?
Voice of Jesus: That's not for you to know, Stan, my man.
Stanley: But you just said the kingdom of God is near --
Voice of Jesus: It is, Stan. The kingdom of God is seen when my Spirit reigns in the hearts of my people on earth.
Stanley: Huh?
Voice of Jesus: If you will see me -- respond to me -- in your brothers and sisters who need help, Stanley, you will see the kingdom of God.
Stanley: Oh, I see ... I think. (Looks up to the sky)
Voice of Jesus: Stanley?
Stanley: Yes, Lord?
Voice of Jesus: Stop looking up in the air for a Hollywood production with trumpets and stallions and pink-and-purple clouds. Look at those around you, who need you!
(Stanley puts his arms out to Norman and William; they all hug)
Voice of Jesus: "And to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God."
