REVIVING THE SPARK
Study Skits Of Biblical Truths For Youth
Characters:
Dwight
Valerie
Genie
Guy from audience
Valerie: ... And furthermore, you're the most despicable, disgusting creep I've ever known! I hope I never see you again! Have a nice day! (Exit Valerie)
Dwight: Oh, Valerie, Valerie I can't live without you. Lost, desolate, emotionally challenged Hey, audience, you want to hear about my problems? (The answer comes back "no" ) Well, you're going to hear them anyway. First, I lost my driver's license. I was only doing 80 through a school zone, and it was just my third ticket this month. Bad cop. Then I get kicked out of school for rolling a cherry bomb into the teachers' lunchroom. I mean, can't they take a little joke? And now Valerie - Miss Mega Universe - gone - major league problems.
Guy: Hey, if I give you this, will you shut up?
Dwight: What is it?
Guy: Just read the directions. (Guy exits)
Dwight:
(Reading from bottle) My name is Genie. Rub the lamp and say, "(name of your high school)
rules," three times and out I'll come. Why not? (He says it and out comes Genie from the side of the stage)
Genie: I am Genie at your service.
Dwight: Aren't you supposed to come out of the lamp in a cloud of blue smoke?
Genie: That's Hollywood stuff. This is just low budget (name of where you are) fare. Now, make a wish whatever you desire.
Dwight: Just one wish? I've got a lot of problems. Ahh! That's it. I want a life free of troubles no problems.
Genie: I can't do that for you.
Dwight:
You said whatever I desire.
Genie: Let me warn you first. I can fix your circumstances so that you appear to have no problems, but I can do nothing about your inward perspective.
Dwight:
What's the difference?
Genie: Everything.
Dwight:
You Genies are all alike. Just do it.
Genie: Granted. (Exit Genie. Enter Valerie in a mad rush)
Valerie: Dwight! Dwight! I love you! Never let me go. I'll follow you to the ends of the earth!
Dwight:
Hey, this stuff works. Watch this, Valerie. (He does a sleight-of-hand and produces a driver's license)
Valerie: How did you do that?
Dwight:
No problems - see this expulsion paper? (He rips it up and tosses it) I'll be back in school on Monday - if I feel like going.
Valerie: Oh, Dwight - (She reaches out to him with both arms)
Dwight:
What's this? (Looking at one of her arms)
Valerie: It's a freckle. I have lots of them.
Dwight:
It's ugly!
Valerie: It never bothered you before.
Dwight:
Now that my life is perfect, everything bothers me. Get lost. (Valerie exits in tears) Hey, wait a minute. This isn't any good. I need Valerie. (He starts rubbing the lamp again) Hey, Genie - is there any way to undo this?
The Wish
Questions to consider:
1. Is the problem-free life the ideal life?
2. What happens when we run from or avoid our problems?
3. What is a better way to handle our problems?
The key point:
There is no such thing in this world as a problem-free life. But Christians can learn to see problems as opportunities to grow as we call upon God for wisdom and strength to deal with them. We learn endurance, character, and the sense of victory when we overcome them. We increase in our capacity to handle even bigger problems.
Running from or avoiding problems will diminish our character. Small problems we hadn't previously noticed become mountains. That is how Valerie's freckle became too much for Dwight to handle.
