Time with God
Children's sermon
Object:
A prayer clock (drawing of a clock with a circle around the 5.)
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Good morning boys and girls. I hope you had a wonderful night of sleep in your own bed. How many of you just love your bed? (Let them answer.)
But I don’t want to talk about beds. I want to talk about my clock. I drew a picture of it to show you so that you will know about this clock. What are the words on my clock? (Let them answer.) Very good, you are all good readers. It says, “Pastor’s Prayer Clock.”
There is something else on it that makes it different. Can you tell me anything else that is different? (Let them answer.) Very good, the number 5 has a circle around it. Do you know why there is a circle around the 5? (Let them answer.) The 5 means 5 o’clock in the morning. Pretty early time to get up.
When Jesus would stay in someone’s house he would get up very early and go to a place where no one else was around and sit down. Sometimes he would close his eyes and fold his hands and he would begin a conversation with God. They might talk for a couple of hours or only for a few minutes. But Jesus always looked stronger when he finished that conversation.
I marked my clock last night for 5 o’clock in the morning so that I could get up early and pray about meeting together this morning in church. I went out on my porch, sat down, closed my eyes and talked with God. It was a wonderful time to be with God all by myself.
Maybe you would like a clock like mine. You can mark the clock on whatever you want to but when it is time you need to find a place where you are all alone and be like Jesus. Just talk to God and listen carefully so you will remember what he says to you. Amen.
