The exclusivity of God's inclusive reign
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
The exclusivity of God's inclusive reign
Gospel Note:
Luke uses the rather speculative question about the number to be saved as an opportunity for Jesus to answer with an expanded version of the parable of the feast from which some late comers are excluded by the owner of the house. What is intended here is the apocalyptic messianic feast, and a warning that the coming reign of God, which is in principle inclusive (vv. 28-29), will in fact be exclusive, precisely because of the dilatoriness of would-be participants.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
O Christ, Our Light, O Radiance True
Built On A Rock
Hope Of The World
In Christ There Is No East Or West
From All That Dwell Below The Skies
106
Proper 16 -- Pentecost 14 -- OT 21
Thank you, Lord, for making your expectations
clear.
You are clear about wanting to be personally
involved in our lives.
You are clear about calling us to listen to your
word and to follow through in our actions.
You are clear about directing us to take the
pathway of service rather than the road to
personal gain.
You are clear about the need to adjust priorities
so that your kingdom is what matters most to us.
You are clear about helping us to see our role
in bringing your kingdom to others.
You are clear about what will happen to those who
live life their own way.
Grant us the enthusiasm to do our part in
building up the kingdom and give us patience as
your plan unfolds.
Amen.
