Fishers Of Men
Children's sermon
Children's Sermons A To Z
Exegetical Aim: The evangelistic nature of Christianity.
Props: A fishing pole or rod with no line.
Lesson: Two volunteers from the congregation to act like caught fish. The chairs of the evangelism committee and the outreach committee would be a good tie in. Otherwise, choose a male and female to represent the fish. I have a question for you this morning. What do I have in my hand? (a fishing pole) What do you do with a fishing pole? (you catch fish with it) That's right. How many of you have been fishing? (response) Did you catch anything? (response) What kind of bait did you use? (response)
There's a story about some men who went fishing. They fished all night and caught nothing. So they gave up and were putting their fishing nets away and they were disappointed. No fish after all that work!
What do you think happened next? Did they go home without any fish? (response) Why don't we see if we can catch some fish with this pole right now? Do you want to? (response) Cast the imaginary line into the congregation. A volunteer will now jump up unexpectedly from the middle of a pew and be reeled in. Oh, it's a big one! When the fish arrives, take him off the "hook." I'll just yank this out. Have him sit down among the children. Whew, that was exciting!
Well, those men didn't go home without any fish. Do you know why? (response) Because Jesus suddenly showed up, and Jesus told them to go out into the deep water and cast their nets one more time. And do you know what happened? They threw out their net again another person from the other side of the congregation pops up in the middle of a pew and is reeled in and they caught another fish. In fact, they caught so many fish in their net, the net began to break. Introduce the two fish (committee members) and have them share what they do for the church. If they are not committee chairs, simply ask the two fish if they would like to follow Jesus. They are to respond, "Yes, we would."
Application: Jesus told these fishermen that they were no longer going to be fishing for fish but they were going to be fishing for people. This is how the church grows - by asking friends and neighbors if they would like to become followers of Jesus. You can do this too. You can be one of Jesus' fishermen. Let's go fishing for God and see if we can't catch some boys and girls. We can tell them that God loves them and ask them if they want to become followers of Jesus and join us here at church. Do that this week.
Let's Pray: Lord, teach us to be your fisherman ready to share your love with others. Amen.

Epiphany 5
1 Corinthians 15:1--11
Holding Fast
Exegetical Aim: To demonstrate the necessity of continually believing the gospel.
Props: A rope.
Lesson: How many of you are swimmers? (response) Good. Some of you can swim, and some of you will learn how one day. It's good to be in the water and to have fun when it is hot outside, isn't it? But sometimes we can get into trouble when we are swimming, can't we? If we get a gulp of water or a cramp, we can begin to sink in the water, and that's not good, is it? (response) Hold up the rope. What is this? (response) Yes. And for what might a rope be used if you are near people who are swimming? (response) Correct, it is something which can be held. If someone is in trouble and doesn't know how to swim, you can throw him a rope, and he can hold on to it to keep from sinking. You can save someone by throwing them a rope. What if that person decides that he doesn't need that rope anymore, and he lets go? What's going to happen? (response) Correct, he will sink.
Application: The Apostle Paul taught us how Jesus saves. Paul also said, "I would remind you of the gospel by which you are saved, if you hold it fast." The gospel of Jesus Christ is something that we have to hold onto every day of our lives. If we let go of the gospel of Jesus Christ, then we are going to begin to sink, aren't we? Jesus Christ died on the cross so that we might believe in him and be forgiven, and live life forever. Like a rope thrown out to us when we are sinking in water, we must hold on to the gospel of Christ that is given to us. So, never let go of the gospel of Christ. It is what saves you and me, if we hold it fast.
Let's Pray: Thank you, God, for sending your Son to save us from our sins. Help us always to hold fast to the gospel, because it is the gospel that saves us. Amen.
