God of the living, Guarantor of life
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme: God of the living, Guarantor of life
Gospel Note:
Jesus' response here to the resurrection-denying Sadducees underscores the limitations of their collective religious imagination, which simply failed (1) to comprehend the radically different character of the new age that Jesus was announcing and (2) to discern the logical (and eschatological!) implications for believers in the ''God of the living.''
Liturgical Color: Green
Suggested Hymns:
Rejoice, Angelic Choirs, Rejoice!
Forth In Thy Name, O Lord, I Go
As Saints Of Old
Praise The Lord, O Heavens
Proper 27 -- OT 32
Lord God,
we are familiar with the approach of the Pharisees
and the Sadducees.
Their goal was not to build but to destroy.
They did not like Jesus or his message.
Their delight was in raising irrelevant questions
and pointing out petty technicalities.
They played with words, but the Living Word was
more than a match for them.
The words of Jesus have the power to
encourage sagging spirits and to shore up
the foundations of our lives.
His words are crafted so that the core of our
being might be touched and transformed.
Oh Lord, we have received your word and we now
seek to use our words to build up others.
In the name of Jesus,
Amen.
