Lord versus the law
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
Lord versus the law
Gospel Note:
Verses 1-3 set the context for a proper understanding of the parable about the prodigal son. For Jesus offers this story (along with the one in 4-10) in response to the criticism from the Pharisees and scribes that he associates with sinners. Thus the parable is about the kind of gracious love that bursts through both legal and social structures in order to forgive and accept.
Liturgical Color:
Purple
Suggested Hymns:
On My Heart Imprint Your Image
God Loved The World
I Trust, O Christ, In You Alone
Lord Of Glory, You Have Bought Us

Lent 4
Both of the sons had problems, didn't they, Lord?
The younger son was selfish and short-sighted.
He felt that life would be much better
without responsibility.
So, he took his share of the property
and left.
The older son was insincere and resentful.
He lived his life out of a strong sense
of duty rather than devotion.
He had his eye on a greater share of the
property, so he stayed at home.
Each son had his problems; nevertheless,
the father genuinely and deeply loved them both.
Lord, it is clear that problems do not stand in
your way when it comes to loving us.
Help us each to see that no problem should be
allowed to block the growth of our relationship
with you.
Open us up to your Spirit, so that we learn
new methods to solve our problems.
Build up in our hearts a healthy sense of
responsibility so that we are able to live the
fulfilling life which you intend for each one
of us.
Amen.
